Climate Control in Data Centers: Why It Matters
As you are likely aware, InfaCloud hold your data and website files on our dedicated servers. The servers in which we own are located in a French data center. A data center is a large warehouse with rows of racks holding computers. These computers are either cloud computing servers or servers dedicated to specific clients.
With the rise of temperatures this week across the world, it is important that the data center’s climate is controlled and prone to overheating. If the climate of the data center is not managed, it could cause major problems such as decreased performance, increased cooling costs, and increased risk of hardware failure. In this post, we will explain what our technical department at France does to keep the data center climate under control.
Humidity Control
Humidity control is an important aspect when it comes to keeping our servers at the correct temperature. If the temperature gets too high and the moisture content becomes elevated, we run the risk to damaging our servers because of water condensation. The more moisture and humidity in the air, the greater the chances that our server hardware could short out or be otherwise adversely affected by moisture. By ensuring that humidity levels are kept at an ideal level (usually around 50%), we reduce the risk of our server hardware being damaged by moisture.
Temperature Control
While humidity control is important for keeping your server cool, temperature control is just as important. In the absence of temperature control, there is a greater chance of a hardware failure due to increased heat. Temperature and humidity controls are essential for the longevity and performance of our server. Extreme temperatures are one of the worst things for any data center. The main reason for this is that extreme heat or cold can cause electronic components to malfunction and make it difficult to operate. For example, when a server’s internal temperature reaches 65 degrees Celsius, it could cause data to become corrupted. In order to tackle this we use a water-colling system on our servers to reduce the temperature where needed.
Measures implemented to Control the Climate
Lightning rods are installed to reduce the concomitant electromagnetic radiation.
Our Data Center office is set up away from the risk of flooding or earthquakes.
We have emergency transformers with automatic load-switching for power supply in case of emergency.
The Date Center is home to Automatic switching to electricity generators with a minimum autonomy of 24 hours.
A water-cooling system is used for servers.
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units are used to maintain temperature and humidity at constant levels.
A fire detection system is in operation (fire drills are run every six months in our Data Centres).
