Ever spent good money on a website, waited patiently for the enquiries to roll in, and then heard nothing but crickets? You’re not alone, and I promise it’s not because your business isn’t good enough. Nine times out of ten, there’s something specific holding your form back — and once you fix it, the enquiries usually start flowing.
Here’s what I’ve learned troubleshooting this exact problem for InfaCloud clients over the years.
First Question — Is It Even Working?
Right, before we blame anything else, let’s rule out the obvious. Send yourself a test enquiry using your own contact form. Did it arrive in your inbox? Did it end up in spam? Did you get an error message on the site?
You’d be amazed how often the answer is “actually, no, it’s been broken for months”. HubSpot has reported that a significant portion of small business websites have form issues they don’t even know about, and I’d bet the real number is higher.
Common causes include an SMTP setup breaking after a hosting change, a form plugin update that quietly stopped working, or your notification email address landing in your junk folder every time. If your form’s been silent for months, this is where I’d start.
Is Your Form Actually Findable?
Sounds daft, but hear me out. I’ve seen websites where the only way to reach the contact form is through a tiny “Contact” link buried in the footer. If people have to hunt for it, most won’t bother.
Your form should be obvious. A “Contact Us” button in the main navigation, a shorter contact form embedded on your homepage, and clear CTAs throughout the site pointing to it. We designed ACM Media’s rebuild with contact prompts in multiple places on every page, and their enquiry rate reflects that.
If you’re relying on people scrolling all the way to the footer to find you, you’re making it too hard.
Is Your Form Too Long?
This is a big one and probably the most common problem I fix. The temptation is to ask for everything upfront — name, email, phone, company, budget, timeline, how they heard about you, their inside leg measurement. Understandable, because more info means better-qualified leads, right?
Wrong. Every extra field you add reduces the number of people who’ll bother finishing the form. HubSpot’s research on form fields consistently shows that shorter forms convert better — often significantly so.
My advice? Name, email, and message. That’s it for a first enquiry. You can qualify them properly on the follow-up call or reply. Don’t put people off before they’ve even said hello.
Is Your Website Getting Enough Traffic In the First Place?
Right, this is the elephant in the room. If your website only gets 20 visitors a month, even a brilliantly designed form won’t generate meaningful enquiries. You need enough traffic for the form to have something to work with.
If you’re not sure how much traffic your site gets, log into Google Analytics or ask your web person. If the number is worryingly low, then honestly the form isn’t your problem — your visibility is. That’s where SEO and content come in, and it’s a longer conversation.
We had exactly this scenario with a new client last year — beautiful site, perfectly designed form, no enquiries. Turned out the site had almost no organic traffic. Once we sorted the SEO, the enquiries followed.
Are You Building Trust Before Asking For the Enquiry?
Nobody fills in a contact form for a business they don’t trust yet. If your website looks like it was thrown together in 2015, has no testimonials, no case studies, no photos of you or your team, then people won’t feel confident enough to reach out.
Look at sites like CTL Networks or Redefine Clothing — both have strong trust signals throughout, from testimonials to portfolio pieces to clear branding. That’s what makes visitors comfortable enough to hit “send”.
If your form is fine but your site doesn’t build trust, that’s where to focus.
Time For an Honest Look
If you’ve read this and thought “yeah, that might be my problem” for any of the above, don’t panic. All of these issues are fixable, and most of them don’t take long to sort. The hardest part is knowing which one is actually the culprit.
